Year of Action: Winter Retreat 2014
Building on Year of Action's Sunday workshops, we will continue to delve into how to use community organizing strategies to create systemic change and apply an anti-oppression lens to our work. Beginning the process of producing our own action plan for the spring, we will learn about three of JCUA's social justice campaigns, respectively addressing immigration justice, economic justice, and gun violence in Chicago. After hearing from our community partners on those campaigns, we will choice one to work with for the rest of Year of Action.
Note that this retreat is a critical part of the overall curriculum during which we will complete the training phase of our community organizing curriculum and begin building an organizing campaign including an action in the spring. There is no additional fee associated with this retreat; the cost of the retreat is included in Year of Action tuition.
Dates, Time, and Location:
The retreat will be held from Friday, January 31 (4:00 p.m.) through Sunday, February 2 (12:00 p.m.) at Hostelling International in downtown Chicago (24 E. Congress Pkwy, Chicago, right around the corner from JCUA's offices). It is a fantastic location and Or Tzedek has held programs there for the past six years.
Round-trip bus transportation from Beth Emet Synagogue will be provided for those who reserve a seat (we are limited to 43 passengers so please register early through the medical form). The bus will depart Beth Emet at 3:15 p.m. on Friday and return at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday. Hostelling International is also easily accessible from the CTA Purple and Red Lines, and is a 20 minute walk from the Metra Union Station stop. While this retreat is comparatively local, please note that early departures and ‘ins and outs’ are not permitted.
Emergency Contact and Medical Form:
Please fill out the Emergency Contact and Medical Form by Sunday, January 5, 2014. Submitting the form will confirm your attendance of the retreat. The form is available online here. If you are having trouble accessing the online form, I will send you a copy in another format.
Kosher and Shomer Shabbat Program:
In order to build an inclusive and diverse Jewish community where participants with different Jewish practices will feel welcome, the Year of Action retreat will be a kosher and Shomer Shabbat program. This allows us to create an experience where every participant can participate in every part of the retreat. We will thus observe a Shabbat candle lighting time of 4:48 p.m.
