Or Tzedek's 2012 Election Campaign
Join Or Tzedek in a local non-partisan effort in the upcoming 2012 Elections that crosses ethnic, racial and religious lines, transforming community relationships and advancing a social justice agenda. It is time for teens to raise their voices together for immigrant justice and bring this social justice issue to the forefront of the 2012 November elections .
We are already in action working to increase immigrant voting power in Chicago’s North Shore communities, focusing on Highland Park and Highwood. Immigrants have been increasing in great numbers in Chicago’s northern suburbs. However, even with this growth, immigrants are not proportionally represented as leaders, elected officials or in other positions of power. Immigrant issues are many times not supported or even heard by current leaders.
Together with Fenix Family Health Center, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, and the Jewish Social Justice Roundtable, we are taking an active role to ensure that our government truly represents ALL members of our society.
We can’t do it without you. RSVP to the Oct. 28 Canvass on Facebook!
Campaign Goals
For Or Tzedek, the non-partisan election work is a building block for creating a lasting network of Jewish and immigrant teen leaders in the 10th Congressional District who can hold state and federal elected officials accountable to immigration (and other) social justice issues. Equally important are the lasting relationships we are working to build through the election work with immigrant youth groups in the area (and between Jewish teens of different denominations).
Following the election we plan to continue the collaboration with the Jewish and immigrant youth to ensure that our work to increase immigrant voting power and political support for immigrant issues will result in concrete change for directly impacted communities.
Between now and November, we will focus on increasing opportunities to bring together Jewish and immigrant teens and adults to collaborate on voter registration, voter education, and voter turnout efforts. Following voter registration canvassing action on September 9th as part of Or Tzedek's Summer 2012 Reunion, establishing a blueprint to improve upon for later events, we will establish regular joint canvassing events for teen volunteers from different backgrounds to work together on voter registration and GOTV efforts.
Throughout the campaign we will work to increase the leadership and organizing development of our youth by providing development opportunities such as trainings on electoral organizing and leadership roles in the campaign. Towards our goal of using the campaign to build political support for immigration issues, we will be talking to voters in the communities about local and national issues including the DREAM act and a state bill to grant undocumented immigrants the right to drive in Illinois.
